Learning Angling for Brown Trout
QualityBooks.com

The most prolific trout in the world is the brown trout; it is found in almost all temperate lakes and rivers of the world. Brown trout is more adept at dealing with warmer water, lower oxygen levels and more sediment in the water. This means they are lot tougher than most of the trout varieties. Fishing for these trout requires stealth, cunning, accuracy and light tackle. They are known to be very smart for any angling activity.

When looking for brown trout on a stream you have never ventured before, take care to wear polarized sunglasses to cut glare on the water as you scout for fish with square tails (a characteristic of brown trout). Concentrate and look out on pools under the bridges or in deeper pools at the ends of riffles and stone pediments.

Don’t spend time exploring the shallow flat water as these are the areas that warm up pretty quickly and offer no cover for wary trout. More often you might see chubs and other rough fish dimpling and jumping on the water. Never be fooled; these are not trout. Instead, seek out pools at the foot of riffles, deep water, rapids and undercut banks. Don’t neglect rock walls. Fish hold out tight against a wall surface and often is not seen even with polarized glasses. For river fishing wet fly is the easiest, the river straightens a bad cast and if you use a slow figure of eight retrieve, your chances of hooking are increased.

To carry out dry fly fishing, always cast upstream a few inches above where you see a rising fish or expect a fish to be. Now the current will carry your fly back downstream and reel in the extra slack back so you can react quickly if you get a strike. If your dry flies aren’t working any more, let them sink slightly under the water and allow the fish to rise just under the surface.

If you need to cast nymphs, always fish downstream and let the current pull your fly through the water. For spin casting, bring spinners (size 0-2) and small floating crank baits. Try and use an ultra light rod with 6-lb line.

It’s best to avoid fishing with live bait. Because it can not be used in the early season and undersized fish are more often gut-hooked after swallowing live bait. Explore new vistas and don’t limit your fishing experiences to a few waters. When fishing lakes, wild trout can be found feeding in very shallow water close to the bank, always fish these areas first. Drive around to different streams and don’t judge a stream by what you see at a particular bridge. Water that might look too narrow or too full of obstructions can have terrific pools just upstream.
